Persimmon:how much is too much (forum)

my lovely nonastrigent persimmon tree, now 3 years old has about 150 buds on it. Surely most will fall off, but I'm wondering how many I can keep. Notice the size of the trunk - not too big! And I'd hate for any branches to crack or break. Actually had two lovely persimmons growing during first and second year, so I didn't expect anything like this deluge of buds. Any advice from your experience will be appreciated.

Hi Hillel, you are right in thinking you tree will drop most of these flowers, possibly even all of them. If this was my tree I would be inclined to remove all the fruit for another year. Give it a deep drink and top dress with some fertilizer to give it another years growth before leaving it to fruit. I think my grafted astringent tree took 4-5 years to start fruiting, it dropped all its buds before this time. It is now 10 years old and spectacular, it is a big spreading tree that can carry loads of fruit - well worth the wait.

For young trees I pinch off the buds early so the tree does not invest energy into starting fruit that will not be kept. Excellent advice above, but I sometimes leave a few fruit to inspire me to keep looking after the tree well. I also use thick mulch over the top dressed fertiliser it helps keep in the moisture and brings the worms and other soil life up to the fertiliser.

Thanks for sharing your ideas with me. I'll try not to be too impatient. As I said, I had two lovely "kaki" (Japanese persimmon) each of the tree's first two years, so I'm hopeful for a few this year too.
