Are the dried seed pods of the Poiciana tree safe for children to handle and use in art projects?

We are only using the seed pods not the seeds. See image.

Hi Rebekah

According to NSW Department of Primary Industries List of Poisonous Trees Poinciana pods and seeds are mildly poisonous. Symptoms if ingested are the following: nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, non life threatening except ingested in large quantities.

Just be vigilant and careful and make sure no one is swallowing the seeds behind your back. So you've been warned.

Happy Gardening :-)

Hi Rebekah,

If you are asking whether they are poisonous then I am quite certain they are not. I've heard distant family members discussing how to prepare the actual seeds for some delicacy dishes from older times. Have never seen or tried it though but I'm sure it'd still be safe. Especially if you are only using the outer pods.
Mind you, the are quite hard and woody with semi sharp tips. With a good enough imagination, they are like and sometimes become swords =). Boys will be boys - as I certainly was! So they are only as safe as you make them.
Good luck with the children.
