Pruning Davidson Plum Tree?

    5 responses

Hello!

My 4 Davidson plum trees are becoming very tall! They're probably 20 years old by now.

They're producing fruit considerably well, but I'm wondering, what would happen if I chopped them in half?

Would they sprout two trunks, or would they turn up their toes??

If I should prune them, at what height do you recommend please?

Thank you!

Hi Sandiola,

very nice! & very good question, although my 2 barely there Davison plums are maybe 20cm tall I've been wondering when the day comes if they can be pruned. Did you ever give them any type of prune as they've be growing to train they somehow or are they naturally straight growing?

Hello Sandiola

It's OK to prune back your towering Davidson plum trees about your height for easier maintenance and harvest. Once you prune them more lateral branches will grow. Among those branches select the best 3 or 4 well spaced branches for better light and air circulation.
If in doubt, prune only one or two out of the four so whatever happens you still have 2 or 3 spares left to keep.
Happy gardeninig 😀

It's so funny Farouk, I purchased this house (at an auction, within 10 minutes of seeing it!) without even knowing it had Davidson Plum trees. Seven years later, I was pottering in the front garden and there they were, scattered all over the ground! When I looked up and found hundreds of them, in spectacular purple and green bunches sprouting on the trunks, the look on my face would have been hilarious! :)

So in answer to your question Farouk, no, I've done nothing at all to them since 2001!
