Pruning older peach & apricot trees (forum)

1 responses

TJ starts with ...
I have an apricot tree that I'm guessing might be 10 years old (was a decent size when moved in 5 yrs ago). It only ever produces a couple of fruit. Also has some sap weeping in some spots and gets little holes in leaves. Has three main branches - two of which are touching and growing parrallel to each other. Would like to cut them out and rejuvinate the tree.

Also have a couple of peach trees that are probably the same age, but fruit like crazy to the point they bend and break branches. They too have very poor structure - would like to cut some bigger branches out.

Can anyone give advice on pruning older trees that have poor structure etc. Is it possible to kill the trees with pruning?

It's very difficult to prune Apricots without worsening brown rot so I just leave mine alone but if it's not doing anything I guess you could give it a try.
The again maybe it's just the brown rot that's stopping it fruiting.

If the peaches are still fruiting well it's probably best to not cut them either
