Does anyone know where I can get Quillaja Saponaria (plants or seed) in Oz. I've found seed internationally but would prefer to get something already here.

With a bit of luck you may get some from:

or some seeds from

Good luck.

Hi Jantina,

Many thanks for saving me a pineapple plant. Much appreciated.

BTW, there is a kind of honeylocust/gleditsia australis that has been widely used in Asian country as a natural shampoo. The only drawback is the fruits must be roasted (in open fire or hot charcoal) to get rid of the poison (??) then boil with water to make shampoo, dilute with water again to be used, it can cause eye irritations for some. This stuff realy make your hair shiny naturally. I used to wash my hair but not clothes, I think it would work for cloth washing too. The shampoo does produce some lather.

BTW, I have just learnt that honeylocust is a class 1 weed in QLD but I think the one I mentioned is a different variety because it has very thick straight pods.

Speaking of soap plants, I have been growing Saponaria officinalis for a number of years. It's a lovely groundcover and has a pretty flower.

PFAF says: "A soap can be obtained by boiling the whole plant (but especially the root) in water. It is a gentle effective cleaner, used especially on delicate fabrics that can be harmed by modern synthetic soaps (it has been used to clean the Bayeaux tapestry).

It effects a lustre in the fabric. The best soap is obtained by infusing the plant in warm water. The roots can be dried and stored for later use.

The plant is sometimes recommended as a hair shampoo, though it can cause eye irritations. The plant spreads vigorously and can be used as a ground cover when planted about 1 metre apart each way.
The flowers are slightly scented with a sweet aroma that has an undertone of clove."

Thankyou Lucy, Violet Cactus and speedy. Interesting Lucy, I do have gleditsia growing (will have to check exactly which one) we planted it as animal fodder.
Violet Cactus I have saponaria growing but after the convenience of using soapnuts I was looking for something a bit less fiddly.P.S. Hoping to catch up with you too when I come down in late Sept. Violet Cactus.

Hi Jantina, the little Pouteria tree you gave me is surviving our winter very well and looking good. Lucy saw it when visiting my garden. Looking forward to seeing you in September!
