my red shahtoot is fruiting. There seems to be a lot of seeds on the fallen fruit. Are these seeds viable. Are they worth planting. I know shahtoot wont grow by cutting. Has anybody had success with layering/air layering

Bob, I am new in growing Shahtoot. Would you like to tell me the difference growing from it own Shahtoot roots and budding on something else. What I can see is that the tree grows vigorously like a black mulberry?

I think they bud it on to white mulberry rootstock. I have removed a couple of vigorous shoots this season already

my red Shahtoot is growing on a black mulberry root. The diameter of the Shahtoot trunk is about twice the diameter of the rootstock. From this I assume that the rootstock is dwarfing the tree. I am on an acreage so tree size doesn't matter, and I would like to see how big it will get. At some time Shahtoots must have grown on their own roots.

Hi Bob
My white shahtoot which I bought is doing very well. Not sure what root stock it was budded on. The other 2 which I have budded on to black mulberry root stock are in pots and are doing very well too. I have found on both trees, one had taken over and killed the black mulberry branches. It has many Shahtoot fruits. The other Shahtoot tree had shot up and have lots of fruits but the black mulberry branches are not growing much only a few fruits to pick. Looking at the tree eventually the Shahtoot will take over the black mulberry just the other. Shahtoot grows into a big tree like the black mulberry?
