Safe Trellis material for growing berries (forum)

3 responses

I am hoping to start a section in my garden this year for growing berry vines however I need to build some strong trellis for them to grow. Does anyone know what materials would be safe to use? The garden assistant at Bunnings told me use treated pine logs & lattice which I am reluctant to use due to possible chemical contamination. A neighbour suggested timber poles with some wire (but which wire would i use?)
Does anyone want to share how they grow their berry vines or have any tips?
Many thanks Lisa

You can get the new treated pine posts that are not CCA but look similar (LOSP).

I use pine and don't care and use wires
at 600mm and 1200mm off the ground, warpped around the posts o give a 100mm gap between them for the shoots to go in.

i used steel star droppers which you
can hammer into the ground with a
small sledge hammer.
look in your local area for a rural
supplier for them, they will also
have rolls of 2.5-3mm fencing wire.
i run two lengths of wire at the same
hieght so you can twist them together
to tighten them.
