sternus1 starts with ... Finally managed to get hold of stenocereus gummosus, which reportedly produces the most delicious fruit of all columnar cacti. Beautiful cactus though viciously spiny, has shades of purple in the flesh. I suspect it's going to be a long wait for pitayo. I am going to attempt to cross pollinate this with hylocereus.

phil@tyalgum says... I experimented with some epiphyllums and cross pollinated two which happened to be flowering simeltaneously. The fruit which developed was cricket ball sized and far superior to any dragon fruit I have tried to date. A bright shade of lilac inside and a very pleasant tang on the palate. To think they have been flowering away merrily for years and I didn't realize the potential they had as an edible fruit. And they grow happily in a terracotta pot on a sunny windowsill. The stenocereus looks equally delicious sternus ;))
