stung pawpaw (forum)

my pawpaws are fine till about 2 weeks before they start to colour. then the fruit starts to weep large amounts of translucent grey sticky 'sap' from 'stings' which become larger and darker with the fruit finally becoming completely spoiled before ready to pick. in going to make a few fly traps but not sure if that is the problem -- any ideas?

Peter,Qfly doesn't usually bite paw paws and spotting bugs prefer to bite the growing tips and leaves. If something is biting the fruit it could be allowing a fruit rot disease like anthracnose an entry. It is more likely to just be a fruit rot fungus. You could try mild oxychloride frequently and phosphonate in case of phytopthera but not together because that will burn the leaves.

Could be Rutherglen bug. The sticky sap sounds similiar to the damage they cause. Just guessing.

Its too cold for fruit fly. Black spot (Asperisporium caricae) is supposed to be a problem right now. Mancozeb can help if this is the case.
