Sugar cane cut down? (forum)

Aula starts with ...
Hi,
I've had sugar cane growing slowly but surely in my garden. A few days ago I noticed it had been cut (or, at least, it looked like that). It certainly wasn't a person... so what could this be?
I can't think of any animal that would make such a neat cut, and then would just leave the plant lying there.
I've had somethng similar happen with a carnation plant - it looked exactly like someone had cut parts off with scissors and just left them lying there.
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Deborah
