Are 'Sugar Plums' (which we buy from the markets and fruit shops here in Brisbane) Greeguage Plums and can they be grown in Brisbane and if so are they self pollinating? Thank you!

Hi Jennifer. I am not sure what you mean by sugar plum but I think you mean the Green gage Plum
We actually do sell them but don't have any in stock. To get fruit they would need a cultivator such as the Prune d'Agen Plum
As to if it would fruit in Brisbane well I guess that depends on how good you are. I looked up it's chill hours and found it on this site:
http://ocnursery.com/fruit-plum.html
Apparently it is 500 chill hours meaning the plant needs to be in temperatures of less then 4 degrees in winter for a duration of about 3 weeks.
I notice that it does have semi dwarf charachteristics so maybe if you wanted to put it in a pot and move it to a very cold side of your house you might be right.
I know that the locals at stanthorpe often bring up fruit and veg to the brisbane markets. In Stanthorpe and towards tenterfield they usually get these chill hours making it easy for them. (Hence their amazing apples and cherries) But perhaps they were grown in the brisbane region.
I would try and grow it in a pot first so you can move it around.

Hi Jennifer, If you do have success with them can you come back here and tell me. I guess this will be in another 2-3 years though so good luck remembering hehe
I am currently trying a Gulf Gold Plum
We also had a Dwarf Peach which just pushed it's first flower after 10 years of nothing simply by replanting it in a pot and putting it in the sun.
Here are the details if you were interested
