Hi, I have a Thai Papaya that I purchased last autumn and am concerned that it has a problem ?trace element deficiency. As you can see from the 2 photos of common Papaya I can grow them easily in the sandy soil on Bribie Island so am disappointed in the growth of the Thai variety.CXould you please advise what I can do to remedy the problem.

Regards

Hi Graham

I think your thai papaya is afflicted by the papaya leaf curl virus as shown by the curled leaves in the picture transferred by the white fly insect. Controlling the whitefly population will lessen the infection. Mix a squirt of dish washing liquid and the juice of one fresh lemon to a gallon of water and spray the whole plant especially the undersides. If the symptom is not improving you have to incinerate your sick papaya to avoid spreading it to your other plants.

Happy Gardening :-)

Interestingly I have no white fly present in my garden but take your point that it could be the papaya leaf curl virus. The plant has been growing with the curled leaves since purchasing.

That is a broadleaf bisex papaya and they are red fleshed and more tropical than most. Something is wrong with the roots and nutrition and whether over fertilisation, salinity or something else is going on is hard to tell.
