Greta, you will need to go onto the main Daley's site-
this is actually a forum that gardeners share tips on.
Just click on the 'shop' or 'search' sites on the left or 'contact' to ask the Daley's staff questions.

I haven't actually eaten a thornless blackberry but have eaten kilos of the prickly blackberries that grow wild around Western NSW when I was a kid. Do the thornless ones taste different? I don't really think smuggling one into WA is the answer Lee -we have really strict quarantine for a reason-I gather you were joking? Anybody else in Perth got a thorny one or know where to get one-really after a blackberry not a loganberry as I love the flavour. Thanks

The taste of my thornless blackboerry was very disappointing. and the plant is not very vigorous. No where near anything like the normal thorny one.

Hi Amanda, I have got a thornless blackberry currently in a pot which i got from Floraland Nursery on GreatEastern Hwy i think. Anyway its got some great new growth and is flowering but its only a smallish plant at this stage. So i'm playing the waiting game and looking forward to tasting the fruit- i hope its as nice as the wild variety as you say! Also have a loganberry, youngberry and one boysenberry all in pots at this stage.

Damo says...
down south black berries are a really bad weed around creek lines. The rust that was released as a biocontrol only works on the eurpoean strain of black berries. If the smooth one got out (its the american strain) and passed its resistance to the rust across then the progeny would be even worse weeds.

saying that silvan berry and marion berry can be found in the hanging plastic bags in the buld section at bunnings.

I agree Damo...Saxman - u should check about your vine - as owners of declared weeds are legally obliged to destroy them....there are very sound reasons for this....

Saxman says...
Hmmm i was told by the nursery that the thornless variety was not considered a weed due to a difference in how the canes propagate and that they don't tend to spread suckers everywhere. Otherwise how would a WA nursery get in large quantities from insterstate through quarrantine etc? (I will double check with authorities.)
Cheers

The DPI in Victoria state that "Thornless blackberries are not recorded as weeds in Australia" and they are not part of the weed management program in Tas. So I think that they are considered no to be a problem.

I think it's the crossing and passing of rust resiatnce to the thorny ones not the fact that they are weedy in themselves thats the problems.

Download the following list to check

The list gives a lot of species names and cultivars (like Rubus ulmifolius which is thornless), but commercial blackberrys are complicated hybrids that I can see as been listed inder specific commercial names?

I don't know if anyone interested - but our Bunnings had a "non-suckering" blackberry plant in yesterday!?
They had all sorts (in pots) silvanberry etc etc.
God knows why - as u can't grow them up here! But the blackberry is available - usually you ask them to order plants in that u want.
