Hi all - my next problem.... :( ... this grummichama came with an order of 5 (from Daleys) but this one looks a bit suss to me? Do their leaves often have this streaky pattern? I thought this may be a virus effect? Thanks for any advice/help :)

Oh... looks like a job for the Ag Dept again!? Has anyone else got this problem with their grummichamas?

It's either a natural feature, a chimaera or a mosiac type virus (IMO)?
None of my other five plants have this at all (ie no yellowing)

Mine had that, I eventually pulled it out after about 8 months, as fertilizing didn't help and it didn't grow. I can't remember if it was from Daleys, or bought locally.

Ta HappyEarth - I'll hang onto it and send a leaf down to Ag dept - I am curious now!? I'll let u (and Daleys) know if it comes back as a virus (I did some googling last nite and the closest thing I could see was "yellow strain" tobacco mosiac virus - which made the leaf go all streaky yellow)

Im curious too! I gave mine some liquid seaweed as they are about to put on another flush of growth - im hoping that the new leaves might turn out unblemished. But it does seem more like a virus. Does it cost much to get a leaf analysis done?

Hey HappyEarth...I have sent some leaf samples down to Perth - will let u know what they say.
The photos show a "normal" leaf vs a leaf from the suspect plant/s.

The big plant is an ex-Daleys one I picked up a Tas1 in Perth (is obviously a yr or 2 older).

It was planted on the same day as the 5 small one's I got sent over from Daleys. They have all been treated exactly the same...the big "normal" plant is powering away..whilst the 5 yellow one's are way behind with little or no new growth..?

The big plant does tend to be a little deeper green on the lower half where it is shaded by the mesh surround, interstingly.

When did u buy/receive your 'yellow' plant? My 5 came quite a few months back..maybe they are from the same batch?

Hi HappyEarth - (see above post 2) The initial verdict from Ag Dept is iron deficiency!??? It's not like any iron def'y I have seen - but there u go? I am going to experiment with one of mine and see if it makes any diff'. The lady is calling me back this week - so I will let u know if anything else.

Can u post a pic of one of your leaves at all? I would be really interested in the pattern in yours and also the leaf shape? thanks Rich.

Iron defeciency - thats interesting. I have had my soils tested and they have 5 times the desirable amount of iron recommended for citrus, which grow like weeds around here!

Oh well, Ive attached a couple of photos for you. I will be interested to see how the new spring growth turns out on the grumichama this year :)

JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE says...
Hi guys,

The common cause of iron deficiency
is high alkaline soil pH or excess soil moisture or root rot diseases so have you guys tested your soil for PH level. Your soil may have plenty of iron but the tree can't absorb due to alkaline soil.

Thats true Jujube but the pH of my soil is 6.1 and my citrus which are planted in different spots around the yard show zero signs of iron deficiency.

Thanks for pics HappyEarth.. my hubby took the phone call from Ag dept and my jaw dropped when he told me...! I am VERY skeptical of iron def'y. I reckon it was the secretary having a bash at the problem!? :)))

Your pic No.2 is very like mine and we are on other sides of the continent with very different conditions etc.
And - if this were true - then why is my "normal" plant not displaying this? it's only 2 or 3m away from the really abnormal one and treated the same...

Great info about your iron levels..I will see if I can convince them to test for virus.

Hi HappyEarth - bad news...this is a chimaera - a genetic mutation that is preventing the chloroplasts from developing.
Sometimes it can be the start of a new strain but not in this case, according to the virology people. This may be why my "normal" plant is putting out lots of new growth (and has been since a week or 2 of planting in early Aug09), and these 5 mutated ones are not doing anything at all.

I will get in touch with Daleys next week and see what can be done as I can't afford to waste water on stuff that may never thrive... :(

You may have more luck in a less challenging environ tho'..I guess if u don't get some new growth soon then u will know...it can't be any colder in W'gong than here lately? (and my good plant hasn't been bothered with by the cold at all...)

Amanda, I just discovered something simular on my fig this morning. The really affected leaves were almost all yellow (there were 3 'yellowish' leaves in total, but lots more mottled ones). The fig seems very healthy otherwise, and it is still putting on lush new green growth. I thought maybe it was normal and I just didn't know much about figs. Lots of plants seem to loose their first flush of spring leaves about now (as the bigger darker summer ones emerge) so I thought it may have had something to do with that.

Hi BJ. Are all your leaves affected or just some? This is a pic of my new growth - but only some leaves have it? I was just reading a great US Fig growing site - about Fig Mosiac Virus and the pics comparable.

Not saying it's that specifically though (could be another type) - I have had a bit more virus issues this year than normal - maybe it's the dry weather or something?

They of sort suggest it's somewhat benign - I hope so! (or maybe it is normal?) Thanks for the feedback :)

ps - here is the site if u are interested:

Hi Amanda - the splodging does appear to be affecting a few more leaves. I've removed the ones that look bad this morning and I'll see how it goes. Like you, most of my fig's leaves are healthy. If it is a virus there isn't much I can do. I don't have anything else ficus related so I'll just see how it goes.
