What is good to grow in Albury

    2 responses

Elf starts with ...
I want to grow dwarf fruit trees in pots (we are renting) and I live in Albury. 42oC in Summer and frost in Winter. What is easy to grow in those conditions? Things I can't kill too easily would be a good start! I've got a Lots a Lemons, a Pinkabelle and a Blueberry that I bought locally recently.
Thanks for your help :)

Figs, pomegranates and any of the stone fruits - nectarines, apricots, peaches - will do okay. Just keep the water up to the stone fruits in summer and maybe some shadecloth over them in the really hot part of summer.

You can get a number of different dwarf stone fruit trees nowadays that should do the trick.

I believe Brown Turkey Fig is more cold tolerant than some. You could try and erect a frame over it in winter to protect it while young. Growing against a warm brick wall will help too.

My neighbour in Canberra has a fully grown fig tree and it survives the frosts here. We are not sure what variety as it was an older tree already in place when they moved in.

Hope this might help.

Thanks for your help Eve, it makes me feel more confident as I go to spend $xx that I'm not going to be burying it in the form of dead trees 12 months down the track :) Appreciate the advice,

Angela
