My fig is also covered in it but doesnt seem to affect the tree's vigour. Should I do something about it and if so what?
Last winter I removed most of it by simply rubbing it off the branches.

Agricultural oil spray . One trade name is Eco Oil. Use sump oil if you are as cheap as me at 3% v/v.

What type of scale?? Is there a name for it?? The tree gets it every year, nuisance and unsightly.
