Mark H starts with ... Hi, this stuff has appeared in the fork of the lower branches of my apricot. There seems to be sap under it and I'm just wondering if I should clean it off or if it is some kind of natural protection that the tree is providing. It seems to be hardening, about a week or two ago it was softer. The tree has plenty of fruit on it and seems healthy otherwise. Any ideas? thanks Mark

Grant says... Mark, It looks like you have a borer, and most likely multiple borers. They are capable of ring barking the tree. The gum is produced by the tree to try and protect itself but does more to protect the borer. Scrape the gum off, insert a piece of wire into any hole you find and you should hook out a grub. Some of the grubs are very small so I spray the area with pyrethrum in case I miss any. A systemic insecticide will also do the trick but I prefer the former method. | About the Author 4th December 2009 10:02am #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Gus says... I agree, you have Borers. I currently have them in one of my plum trees. I have been using wire for 6 months. It has done some good. But I still have some to kill. I'm keen to spray something, however I was under the impression there wasn't much point in spraying. Also fertilising the tree should help.
