Which Lemon Tree Do I Have?

    5 responses

Hi

This lemon tree finally gave us matured fruit after 20 years of growth.

It was supposed to have been a grafted meyer/lisbon/eureka, but this is not what has eventuated.

It would flower, then start to grow fruit. They would get to around 1-2mm and then drop off. So we never knew what we had.

During last year we planted up around 250sqm into a vegitable garden, so maybe we had more nutrients etc and finally the fruit held to reach this stage. Though I had been fertilising with citrus fertiliser for years.

Was surprised to see orange coloured fruit rather than yellow.

The tree has always looked healthy.

Would be happy to know what is this tree.

Note the taste of the fruit is not sour, but tastes rather like a sweet lemon.

Looking forward to the collective knowledge of the forum.

Meyer lemons are sweet lemons, but they have a smoother skin than the ones in your photos, unless they are over-ripe in which case they become a darker colour and more rough skinned. Your lemon also looks rather small. I think a good pruning might rejuvenate your lemon tree and give you better lemons. That was my experience.

I think its a Rough Lemon, they are commonly used as Citrus rootstocks, and also grow wild as Bush Lemons.
Yours looks like a Red RoughLemon https://citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/stow_red.html
Most Bush Lemons and Rough Lemons are usually more yellow,
https://citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/schaub.html
They usually taste like Lemon and Mandarin combo.
The rough skin and nipple on the bottom is a common trait.

Another possibility is Rangpur Lime
https://citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/australian_red.html Rangpur has a more sourish Lime Mandarin flavour.

Rough Lemon and Rangpur are very similar, but the foliage is slightly different.

When you say ...Note the taste of the fruit is not sour, but tastes rather like a sweet lemon...
How sweet is that ?? Both Rough Lemon and Rangpur have more of a mandarin element than regular lemons but usually are not exactly sweet.
However there are Non Acid forms of both..

A picture of the foliage might help ID. Both should have reddish new growth tips.

Interesting on your thoughts.

Not really sweet but not sour.

I will keep you all informed.

Will give it a prune and see what happens

Also size and shape of the seeds is a fair indicator..small seeds compared to orange and lemon with different shape.
