Hi, would anyone be able to tell me if White Sapote is hardwood or softwood as I need to get rooting hormone for when I attempt to air layer graft it.

Hi Chad

Normally scion used for grafting are one year old for better result. It should have approximately the same diameter as the rootstock for good alignment of the cambium layer for better success. If you want to be accurate with the diameter of the rootstock and scion you can use a caliper to measure it, otherwise just eyeball it. Same with air layering, use a one or two your old stem. Rooting hormone will help instigate good root development. And yes, white sapote is considered hardwood when it comes to grafting and air layering. Goodluck on your asexual propagation adventure.

As Always Happy gardening :-)
