Young poinciana plant (forum)

Susan starts with ...
I planted a small poinciana earlier in the year and all of the branches and leaves have fallen off so that it is merely a 30cm tall stick. I know it is still alive though as it has tiny green bits coming out of the stick. What is the best way to help this poor little guy grow strong?

These guys drop most of their leaves and stems over the cooler months Susan...but you will find that the tiny green bits that are now starting to come out, are new leaves and branches. My big trees keep some of their leaves over winter, but my smaller one is just like a stick and is just starting to put out new leaves and branches now. I have a huge one that is never fed, but it loves a good water.

So lovely paula-f! they are nitrogen fixers also. I have 7 here and they are tough as old boots. They flower beautifully even this far "south".
They do like a good drink too Susan - they form deep strong roots so get them heading down with a deep soaking rather than shallow watering - then it will take off.
Where is Eltham?

I'm sure yours wont take long to reach a decent size Susan, once they get going, they never stop. I lopped off a couple of huge branches off one of mine as it was casting too much shade on some of my fruit trees.....and it just sent out some new shoots where I made the cut. Thanks for that info about it being a nitrogen fixer Amanda, I didn't know that.
