Zucchini - odd shape (forum)

It's happened again! My zucchini, instead of being long and slim, have become sort of pear-shaped while still small. Hard to describe, but very bulbous at the end.
Is this a virus, or nutrient deficiency?

Not sure I have a answer but more a question. HAve you had a normal shaped one before the mishapen ones.
Zuc's cross hence if you are seed saving or using seedlings you might have a zuc/butternut cross or something similar. I had this last year.
Big zuc but man it tasted bad.

Hi Julie,
I'd say your soil is lacking some boron. Don't overdo the boron though.
Also, dig in some dolomite & sulphate of potash, that should help.

Charles, these were from bought seed, and I didn't grow any other squash-type plants last year. I will try the boron. I have some borax - is this OK?

Borax is apparently ok though I have always had multi trace powder and boron powwder about so never used it.
"Mix a quarter level teaspoon of borax with a half gallon of water for using over an area 5 square feet."
Personally I would be inclined to pick up a multitrace element and treat you whole area. If your deficient in one area it likely in the others, and I think boron is in the multitrace elements.
If you dont have it in your soil you dont get it in your food !

Borax is fine Julie, virtually the same thing. It will fix your problem I'm sure

Borax also staves off annoying plant-eating earwigs.
