All hazelnuts are self-sterile, requiring pollination from a genetically compatible partner. Pollen release timing and genetic makeup both contribute to variety selection, and commercial orchards often select 3-4 "pollinator" varieties to plant amidst their main harvest cultivar. Hazelnuts are often planted in close spacings as they are wind pollinated.
