Paulaf1's Edible Backyard
Wampee (Seedling) Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4625 days 1hrs Comments: - This was a seedling tree, so grew very quickly. It made a lovely shade tree.......but I found the fruit too "musky" for my taste, so ended up chopping it down. Height 3 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: horse manure, mushroom compost, blood and bone and sugarcane mulch. Avocado - Reed (A) Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5226 days 15hrs Comments: - Just planted this one as I love the creaminess of the Reed avocado. I have it in full sun, so at the moment I have a beach umbrella next to it that I put up if we are going to have a really hot day. Seems to be doing ok so far. Was this review helpful? Dwarf Persimmon - Fuyu (NA) (Grafted) Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5226 days 15hrs Comments: - I love the fruit off this tree. I cover them up with bags and let them go really soft on the tree. This would have to be one of my favourite fruits. I have found them to be very difficult to transplant though, even in their dormant stage as I have killed 2 this way. Strawberry - Redlands Joy Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5226 days 17hrs Comments: - I have quite a few different varieties of strawberries. I wasn't getting much fruit off them for a couple of years, and they always looked quite scrappy...........so I moved them into a different position with afternoon shade, and starting foliar feeding them, and are now getting some great results. White Sapote - Pike (Grafted) 9/10 Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5226 days 21hrs Comments: - This tree fruited after having it in the ground for only a year. The first couple of fruits it produced had quite a bitter aftertaste, and I was ready to pull it out, but the ones I have harvested this year were beautiful. I find you have to catch them when they are just turning soft, as shortly afterwards they will ripen too quickly..........and drop from the tree, causing them to go splat!!!!!!!! Haven't quite worked out what it tastes like yet, as there are a number of flavours combined. This is a lovely looking tree with quite a weeping habit. Planted: 2008 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: Cross Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: compost, horse manure and lucerne mulch. When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: None as yet, but will have to cover the fruit from birds, fruit bats, and fruit fly. Organic Status:Partially Organic Was this review helpful? Mango - Kensington Pride Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5263 days 11hrs Comments: - Great tree with great fruit.......full of flavour and no fibre at all. I keep all my mango trees at about 3 metres tall (I have 4 all together, and cut back 1 each year). This one is in amongst my vege garden, and has a compost bin sitting right underneath, so gets all the nutrients it needs from there. Pollination: No Was this review helpful? Feijoa - Triumph Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5263 days 11hrs Comments: - I finally have feijoas!!!!!! After being very patient and waiting over 5 years for my 3 Bunnings un-named seedlings to flower and fruit.......I gave up and pulled them out, and purchased one each of the mammoth and triumph grafted varieties. One (not sure which as I lost the labels) has fruited in it's second year and has about 5 fruit on. Will have to bag them shortly to keep the pesky fruit fly out. Comfrey Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5263 days 11hrs Comments: - I have this plant growing everywhere. Asparagus - Mary Washington Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5698 days 20hrs Comments: - I love eating this straight off the plant. I have 2 female plants as they both have the red berries, so I only get very thin stems. The odd one is quite thick though, so are worth keeping in. I cut them right back at the end of winter when all the fronds have died back and I give them a good feed of compost and manure just as they are pushing up new growths and keep them well watered over summer. Eco Naturalure - Organic Fruit Fly Control 1L Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5698 days 20hrs Comments: - I usually use the bait to show me when fruit fly are active again after their winter break, but as it only attracts the male, I cover all my fruit. Fig - Sandpaper Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5699 days 12hrs Comments: - This tree came up from a seed a bird dropped. I had no idea what it was at first, but as soon as it grew a bit bigger, and I felt the leaves, I knew what it was. Seems to like where it is, so will probably just leave it as is. I gave it a spray with eco oil and now it is atarting to power ahead. Wax Jambu - Pink (Seedling) 5/10 Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 6137 days 12hrs Comments: - This one has been in for about a year and a half, and is growing very slowly. This is probably due to the fact that it is right at the bottom of the garden, and I sometimes forget to water it. Still stays nice and green though. Planted: 2007 Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Low Sun Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: mulch and dynamic lifter. Was this review helpful? Grape - Isabella Black (Cutting) 6/10 Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 6137 days 12hrs Comments: - I picked this grape because it is supposed to have more resistance to powdery mildew and able to handle humid conditions better than other varieties. I am espaliering it onto 4 strands of wire, which I hope will also help against pests (will be able to cover it easily) and diseases (airflow). It has only just started to come out of winter dormancy, before any of my other grapes......but this is probably due to it being in full sun. Rollinia - Brazilian Custard Apple (Grafted) 5/10 Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 6137 days 12hrs Comments: - I've only had this tree for just over a year, and I have it in amongst some other shrubs and trees. I'm thinking it may be too shady here for it, and when everything starts to get bigger, will be very hard to harvest the fruit. May have to find another spot for it. Planted: 2007 Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Low Sun Pollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: none so far. Pest Control: None so far. Custard Apple - Pinks Mammoth 6/10 Paulaf1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 6137 days 13hrs Comments: - I've had this tree for a couple of years, but it has been moved a couple of times, so has stayed quite small, as it has not been able to become established. May even have to be moved again as I think it will get too big for this position. It has lost all it's leaves so now would be the perfect time. Planted: 2007 Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pruned By: 30% in Spring Pollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: none so far. Pest Control: None so far. I don't think I have enough chill hours here for it to fruit though, so will be grafting some low chill varieties onto this tree in the future, to replace the others.
