Often called the Wonder Tree, the neem has been used for centuries in Asia against insects and for some medicinal purposes. The natural insecticide azadirachtin can be extracted from the seeds of the neem tree. Grafting onto the White Cedar rootstock allows for a stronger root system in cooler regions and less problems with dieback in winter. Removal of any shoots from below the graft is essential maintenance to maintain your grafted neem. Weed warning: in Dry Tropics Neem tree regenerates easily and can be a weed problem. Not a problem in subtropical regions.

Fuyu is a semi-dwarf variety, well suited to growing in small backyards and can be kept to 2m with pruning. The fruit is large and flat, orange-red in colour with a sweet, mild flavour. Great eaten crunchy but just luscious when left to go soft. Besides producing delicious fruit, Persimmons are highly ornamental with their beautiful autumn foliage. Non astringent, so can be eaten when still hard. When young, protect from hot afternoon sun, and when dormant, from wet conditions. Seedless when grown on their own. If cross pollinating with another variety they can have seeds in the flesh as shown in the display picture.

Flavour is highly aromatic and has been rated as superior by Chefs. Fruit is highly ornamental, with its shiny black skin and as a cut fruit, as it has a dark lime green pulp. Displays well as a garnish, with the juice vesicles popping out on cutting and the fruit splitting open wide. Its wide shape facilitates scooping out the pulp with a teaspoon. Rind colour is black/purple at optimum maturity and pulp colour is a dark yellow/green. Mean fruit size is 50mm x 25mm. It is a mid to late season variety but bears fruit all year round.
