A spreading, fast growing medium size shrub with wonderful dense grey/green foliage and attractive clusters of large white blooms that blossom throughout the year. It grows 1-2 m wide and about 1.5m high Grevilleas do best by giving them an annual pruning for shape, health, and extra flowers. It would be great not to have to provide artificial food for birds and allow them to gorge themselves on the natural supply in our gardens. Little wrens just love the prickly Grevilleas and each garden should have at least one prickly plant, giving a home for small birds to hide from predators. Grafted grevilleas are more hardy in challenging soils and locations.

Burdekin Plum

This close relative of the Mango is a native tropical rainforest tree. The deep purple, fleshy, plum-like fruits need to be held for some days to soften and mellow before eating. The flavour then is reminiscent if a prune with a hint of a Davidson's Plum to finish.Early settlers (probably taught by First Australians) were known to bury them in the ground which had the effect of softening them and increasing palatability. The fruit can be eaten raw, or used in wines, jams and jellies. The Burdekin plum is exceptionally hardy and can cope with long dry periods once it is established. It does however prefer free draining soil and lots of sunshine to perform well. Trees are monoecious and will usually set on their own, however they will produce much better yields if they are plants in small clusters of 2-3 trees.

This rare and endangered tree was heavily logged for its timber which is as beautiful as red cedar once it has been soaked to remove the onion scent. If the bark is scratched this also has the aroma of onions. The bright pinkish red fruits attract the beautiful Wompoo and Rose crowned fruit doves, the fruits also smell of onions. The tree is large and attractive and is found in the edges of sub tropical rain forests and in the areas where the rainforest meets the eucalypt forests of northern NSW and southern Queensland. Trees will grow best in well drained rich soil.
