Vetiver Grass - Monto

A non-invasive clumping type grass that does not produce viable seed. Excellent for erosion control as it produces a massive root system that grows straight down rather than out from the plant. It creates a sort of curtain beneath the soil, trapping sediment and slowing down the movement of water. Because the grass grows down instead of outward, it does not become invasive. The roots are very deep, so its best to decide carefully where to plant it because it is very hard to dig up. Watch this Youtube to show a great idea of hedging Vetiver and using it as mulch.

Dwarf Mulberry - Black

This mulberry has a very low chill factor making it ideal for our subtropical climate. Pruning after fruiting allows it to be kept under 3mtrs, and also encourages multiply cropping throughout the summer. It is best to pick the fruit when ripe, as it doesn't ripen further off the tree. A benefit of a mulberry tree is that the fruit ripens over an extended period of time unlike other fruit that often ripens all at once. The fruits of the black mulberry, considered the tastiest and most versatile of the mulberries are large and juicy with a good balance of sweetness and tartness. The fruit of the dwarf black mulberry is the same as that on the large black mulberry that we all know and love. The fruit is large, resembling a blackberry, sweet and luscious. Lomandra hystrix - Mat Rush

This hardy Bushfood plant has arching strap-like leaves and yellow-green flower spikes in spring. Suited to wet soils and is ideal for use around water features. It prefers part shade though will tolerate full sun. It can also be used indoors and will accept a wide range of soils and climates. Useful for drainage swales and erosion control. Like its cousin Lomandra longifolia the base of the leaves make a tasty snack. Pull the leaves out from the base of the clump and chew the white fleshy base of them, they taste a little like sweet peas. The lusher the growing conditions, the better the taste. Flowers are high in nectar and can be soaked in water for a flavoured, refreshing drink. Mature seed can be ground into a flour to make a damper. The strap-like leaves make great weaving material too.
