DWARF PLUM GULF GOLD TREE (G)

Plum -- Gulf GoldBotanical Name: Prunus salicina
Description

This golden plum is firm with excellent flavour & texture and a small seed. 350 hours chill. A dwarf plum tree which makes this an ideal backyard variety. An excellent all-round variety with the added bonus that it doesn't seem to be attractive to fruit fly as much as other stonefruit. Partially self pollinating but benefits from pollination with Gulf Ruby. Perfect for pots.

Question & Answer

My third year plum tree does not bloom and bear fruit.Only the bare branches and leaves. What should I do? From: BENTLEIGH EAST VIC

It looks like it maybe the wrong variety for your climate and is showing lack of winter chill. I would suggest a low chill plum like #DwarfPlum871

What rootstock is gulfgold grafted on? From: KYOGLE NSW

It uses myrobolan as the rootstock. #DwarfPlum871

Very attractive little tree, bearing largish yellow plums. These ripen later than Gulf Ruby and taste reasonably good provided you wait till fully ripe. In second year producing 30 plums even though its partner Gulfruby did not flower this year, so it looks like it's self-pollinating well.

Red skin with gold flesh. Heavy cropping variety that tastes sweet and juicy. Simply delicious straight off the tree. Said to bare off older wood but will fruit off current years growth. In fact so much so that it will break the branches off from the weight of abundant fruit if not thinned.

I tried to prune mine and through inexperience have made the tree more a spreading shrubby mess than anything else. But it still yields massive amounts of fruit for its size. A more upright tree would be easier to manage but, oh well.

Update:

Comments: - One arm of my mutli grafted plum. I had not thinned the fruit and it only took a king parrot or two to break the whole graft off. Not to worry,I grafted a couple of bits back onto the rootstock shoots. I think this will create new problems.

This plant was about 1.5 metres, and it appears that 'something' has gone through and broken the plant to about 300 mm above the ground  and the trunk of the broken is 30 mm thick - we are hoping it will live and reshoot.

5 March 2010 - looks like it has died - so will have to get another one to replace

July 2010 - This tree has now grown from below the graft, and looks like it is a peach tree - waiting to see what kind of fruit we get.

This tree has not died, but has grown from below the graft, and believe it to now be a peach tree or similar - waiting to see what fruit we get from it.
