After some seeds (forum)
16 responses
Greg starts with ...
Austromytrus dulcis
Eugenia reinwardtiana
Podocarpus elatus
I am after about a dozen seeds of each of these.
Would anyone who have any of these plants in their garden be prepared to post me some seeds if I send them a prepaid envelope?

Greg I have a number of Austromytrus plants growing but not fruiting at the moment. They bear heavily over spring and summer - can save some seed for you then if you like.

I have the A. dulcis x A. tenuifolia, which I think is better tasting and a better looking bush, and fruit for me mid-spring through to late autumn. Unfortunately they have just finshed fruiting, and should start back up in mid-spring. If you are still after them in a few months time, I'd be happy to send seed. I also have the standard A.dulcis.

Hi Greg, my midyim went crazy this year so if you want I can send you some cuttings. Im not sure if they come true to type but a cutting grown one would probably fruit quicker.

Hmmn...I had two of these and they flowered and never fruited...then they mysteriously died...the second one at 3yrs old?
I never did work out why - maybe it was too hot here?

It might've been to hot.... my midyim gets no direct sun in winter and in summer it gets shaded in the afternoon by an woolly bush.

Wild midyims can grow in direct sun as nearly prostrate plants in coastal heath, or as sprawling understory along the treeline back from the beach. They seem pretty tough but dry hot days in full sun might be too tough for them

The best description I can come up with is they taste like sweet pine resin.

mine taste nothing like pine. More like cinnamon with a tiny taste of apple with the texture of toothpaste - with lots of tiny seeds for crunch. My wife wont eat them because she calls them 'spider eggs' and their texture is fairly similar to what you'd expect from a spider egg sack.
Mine are fine in full sun here, much hardier than the ugni, but are happier in part shade.

I have to agree with John on the taste. Very resinous, but I have always put it down to being too cold for them down here in southern Vic perhaps.
I don't grow them any more due to the horrible aftertaste.

Nick from Altona, I would love 8 or so cuttings from your Austromyrtus dulcis.
And you are nice and close so the cuttings will survive the trip nicely.
What is on your wish list of cuttings/seeds in return?

Could the resinous taste just be a matter of variation within the species.
After all these are not cultivated productive plants that have been undergoing human selection over decades or centuries.

Greg,
The resinous taste is very plesant. It was the closest description I could muster up at the time, they are a welcome addition to the orchard, definately worth having.

Hi Greg, sure thing just contact me at niksmaster2008@hotmail.com. Most of the seeds I'm looking for are tropical but I am looking for some frangipani or fuchsia cuttings. :)
