Apple pest

    4 responses

I have a Golden Delicious and Pink Lady. Every year I get a good fruit set but lose it to some kind of pest or disease. I've never found any fruit fly larvae in the ruined apples. This year I used Eco-Naturalure extensively and it greatly reduced the fruit fly in my other fruit. The apples looked clean up to about billiard ball size and then showed the same signs as other years. It's probably a simple problem but it's driving me crazy! The pictures are from the Golden Delicious, but the Pink Lady has the same problem. Any feedback about what it is, and how to deal with it, would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
Richard

hi there. It looks more like codling moth damage than fruit fly. You can buy sticky pheremone traps from nurseries for control of the moth.

2 & 3 definitely show ff damage from the stings. That weeping fluid is the result.

heard an old remedy for codling moth. Get some apple sauce and mix in golden syrup and put in a bottle or jar outside. I dont know any finer detail.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback.

Chris, I had thought it looked like fruit fly stings as well but couldn't work out why they've only attacked the apples. I'll use the Naturalure again next year.

Hawkgirl (cool name!) I'm not familiar with codling moth but now done a bit of research. I'll buy some Diamond Traps next year and try that.

Denise, great home remedy tip! I'll give them a dose of that as well.

Thanks again so much!

Cheers
Richard
