Avocado fruit (forum)

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me what they think is going on with my Ettinger Avocado. It's about 6 years old now and looks pretty healthy, a couple of years ago I got a couple of fruit for the first time, but last year I got nothing and this year I got lots of what looks like fruit without seeds. What you see in the photo's is about 10 months old. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks

Sean those are "cocktail" avocados (seedless ones) they are mostly common on Fuerte although I've only even had one of them on Fuerte. It's from not quite right pollination, I'm still not getting fruit on either of my Ettinger trees but they are awesome to pollinate Hass, Maybe I need another late type A to help out, I don't know but you're getting closer than I am, maybe next year you will get full size fruit?

Check this out :)

I doubt gwen would ever make a cocktail fruit. It's a type A for starters and Ettinger is a seedling of Fuerte so they are genetically more likely to do it. Gwen does fine in Victoria, it's closely related to Hass and is pretty similar except a smaller tree and fruit

A lot of people talk about Gwen being a weak plant but mine has gone really well and at about 4 years old is about 8 feet tall and the healthiest looking Avocado at my place. Only problem with mine is it just wants to keep growing straight up so I have to nip the tops out of it.

Thanks for that Jason, that link looks just like what I have. Not sure why they are not pollinating, I have a Rincon and a Gwen not far from it that both flower well, maybe it's just too cold. It set about 3 normal sized fruit a couple of years ago but aside from that nothing.

I've had ONE fruit on Ettinger ever :) and I have two trees. I have another much larger tree of unknown variety (was mislabeled) that has also only ever carried one fruit. I plan to cut that one back soon and attempt to graft it to Hass. But I'll keep the Ettingers as they are. I'll let you know if I ever figure out how to make Ettinger fruit, Fuerte is also a bit iffy here some years but others it carries heaps of fruit. I still have hope though because I've seen another Fuerte in Mount Gambier that has around 400 fruit every year (25 year old tree) so maybe things improve with age. Well at least you know if it ever goes below -8c your Ettinger tree will still be kicking when the rest of them are trashed :)

Thanks for the info Jason. Is gwen a good pollinator for Fuerte? Because those are the two I have at the moment, Gwen and Fuerte. Will they be right for each other or should I get another type A? and is gwen a heavy cropper in victoria?

J yeah Gwen will crop heavy, Fuerte will do fine for you, your night time temps will be a couple degrees warmer than mine and that will make all the difference. It will probably flower a little earlier than Gwen but there will be overlap between the time Fuerte flowers and when Gwen flowers so you'll be fine. My Fuerte tree is having a rest this year but it had 50 fruit or so last year. They do take a bit longer to start bearing than something like Gwen which will go straight away.

Ettinger is the better pollinator for those later Type A's since it flowers later but since it's quite hard to get a fruit from it... Fuerte is the right choice for a type B for you. It's the best tasting type B and one of the most cold hardy, the only other easy to get option is a Bacon but Fuerte is a nicer shaped tree and a better fruit. If you have room you could also get a Hass but I'd say the Gwen will give you enough fruit to be done with Avocados anyway once it gets some size on it. Hass bears so heavy it's really too many fruit to deal with

Thanks Jason, I was toying with getting a Hass as well as I have room, but I'll see how the gwen and Fuerte go for the first year before I get another 1. I'm a little sceptical my avocado trees will fruit up in the hills. Fingers crossed as they say.
