David starts with ... Hi Guys I would like to plant a Avocado in a pot as I don`t have a lot of room for a full grown tree. I was thinking about a Wurtz as they are a dwarf and are available at Daleys but don`t know what they taste like. I was wondering if a Secondo would do well in a pot? If not does anyone have any ideas? Regards Dave | About the Author David19 Sydney 21st January 2009 8:17pm #UserID: 1874 Posts: 3 View All David19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Brendan says... Yes, I would prune the avocado tree that's growing in a pot, that would encourage it to bear. If it's a seedling, it will take ~ 7 years to bear, but they do better in the ground. If it's a grafted tree, give it a bit of blood & bone, super-phosphate, sulphate of Potash & dolomite, to help it bear. It's a good idea to change the potting mix every 2 to 3 years as well. Use only 'premium' type potting mix. | About the Author Brendan Mackay 3rd February 2009 7:06am #UserID: 1947 Posts: 1722 View All Brendan's Edible Fruit Trees |

Brendan says... One way of replacing the potting mix in a pot is; Give the tree a good drink. Lay the pot over on it's side and gently slide the tree (with the wet potting mix) out of the pot. Gently pull the old potting mix away grom the root ball. Stand the pot upright. Add some new potting mix to the pot, (no fertiliser), replace the tree and fill the pot to the level of the previous mix. Give it a drink of water. After ~ 6 months, you can add a small amount of fertiliser (see above) on top of the potting mix and water in. The 'premium' potting mix has some fertiliser in it, that's why we wait ~ 6 months before adding more. Try some Seasol. | About the Author Brendan Mackay 14th February 2009 7:09am #UserID: 1947 Posts: 1722 View All Brendan's Edible Fruit Trees |
