I'm sure a few different types are used by most nurseries.

If you want to do your own Avocado grafting, grow a heap of seedlings and pick out the strongest.

Yes, thank Mark, I'm sure we can do a deal. Happy to pay in any case. Will contact you tonight.
I see Daley's uses plumbers Teflon tape, only tripled up. They have a metal dispenser with three rolls that lead to a single tail out. I wonder why they don't use the yellow gas Teflon? It is stronger but retains the Teflon properties. Some experimentation is in order. I have used single white Teflon before but you have to keep it short otherwise it ends up in a tangled mess.

never thought of using teflon tape - someone told me that tape they uses at Birdwood on Avos was self adhesive like Parafilm but was Hormone impregnated - do u know if thats correct or bulldust??

That's sounds interesting and an unnecessary too.... I found that parafilm is easy to work with cos you don't have to cut it or tie off, but doesn't keep the graft union tight enough sometimes as it stretches and splits quickly. Alot of nurseries seem to use it successfully though. I use that strong embossed grafting tape from fernland most of the time.

Im finding if you do accurate whip and tongues or wedges with an actual wedge in the receiving plant not alot of pressure is required - in fact all my plum grafts and others done this year are flushing new growth - sometimes pressure is required if doing a WnT for an espalier branch graft to main trunk for security against accidental knocking

Yea so true many things eg.apples, passion fruit I have grafted without tape but with avocados I don't have enough rootstock to take chances. I have seen sapodillas come into retail from fitzroy nursery with only a clothes peg on the graft. Such a professional look!

Im testing to see if the Parafilm works better as a scion wrap Vs using a plastic bag over the scion and graft as buds will push thru a single stretched layer - i did this with my cherry grafts and buds are swelling on bing and white cherrys - Love this Spring Push we are having this weekend :)
I dont feel spring is really here till the 21st/22nd anyway

I find plastic bags superior to parafilm for avocados. I have an apple tree that needs grafting. Its a lady Williams and I simply don't have the heat to ripen that apple. It's semi ripe only in July.., I'm going to change it to Fuji.

Back to the rootstocks sub, Daley link as below
http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/plant/Avocado.htm
stated that Daley usesROOTSTOCK Guatemalan Hybrid Seedling, and that could be anything
My bacon fr Victorian citrus farms has zutano rootstock, my wurtz is fr birdwood (no rootstock is specified in the label). Both bacon and wurt are in good state ATM. Since reading on the forum, a few people said that their Avos which were bought fr Daley didnot perform as well as their other Avos, while it may not be entirely because of the rootstocks, I am concerned that it could be not as good an option as zutano rootstock for Melbourne cold winter (Guatemala rootstock has advantage of being more salt tolerant than Mexican rootstock, which is not really my concern)
Btw, the statement below were of Greg Daley in response to Reville complaining about Guatemala rootstock which i cut and pasted

Mexican rootstock is more cold hardier, the rootstock we used has been used for 20 years in the hort industry. Fuerte and Hass are guatamalan hybrid avo varieties and they will not be much hardier than the guatamalan rootstock. | Greg Daley - Kyogle, NSW 20-Nov-2007

I am a bit confused now, what rootstock does Daley use, Mexican or Guatemala hybrid seedling?

Is it true or not that nursery is obliged to give you info about rootstock used? Or it it 'trade secret' !? ;p

Guatemalan is the best rootstock for cool (not COLD) climates. So it's perfect for Melbourne. The reason Daley's Avocados often fail has been mostly bad quality grafts in my experience plus not being in deep bags etc. They just weren't of the same quality as the big commercial avocado nursery's that provide for the commercial growers. They may have changed now because I haven't tried one in a decade.

The Victorian nursery's use Zutano for the Mildura area and it'll do well anywhere but Guatemalan trees are able to grow in cooler air and soil so those will always be the strongest growers in cool conditions. I believe Daley's use reeds seedlings as rootstock by the way because they produce the biggest strongest seedlings are are able to be grafted and sold the quickest. Plus I remember them asking to buy reed seedlings :D.

Mark no new leaf growth on my grafts yet, they did it pretty hard when I ripped them bare rooted out of that pot they were all in. But have started a root flush so I'll plant them in the ground.

About the apples,I like gala but don't have a tree, Fuji is just as good though in a totally different way and I have wood for that.
