There are A and B type avocados, depending on their flowering pattern, and the recommendation is you have an A and a B type for best results, but i've read that for domestic purposes one tree is normally enough, and the unusual flowering behaviour normally only occurs in the tropics, and everywhere else it is less of an issue.
