Rebecca starts with ... BABACO..Not knowing anything about the fruit apart from eating them .Yummy! I live in Southport Gold Coast Qld..regular-size garden..would anyone have seeds or cuttings at the right price for me to grow? I have Feijoa, tamarillo, citrus, pomello, pawpaw, passionfruit (the usual suspects) but would luv 2 grow a Babaco..would I need 2 for pollination & is there a dwarf-size ( I have mobility problems & lots of prunning etc are out of the question). Suitable to handle humidity ova Xmas period for this part of the world please? Happy to pay for postage | About the Author 72 Gold Coast QLD 15th February 2012 1:15pm #UserID: 5373 Posts: 45 View All 72's Edible Fruit Trees |
Mark says... Hi Rebecca... The only place that I ever saw BABACO Growing, was in the Hydroponics section at "GardenWorld", on Springvale Road, Keysborough, VICTORIA. They were part of an hydroponics display there. .. Maybe you could contact them & ask if they have what you want. (I'm not too sure if they do mail orders though?) ... Sooo, Another place you 'might' try is "Digger's Seeds", located at Heonswood VICTORIA. They are a Seed Mail Order company,& have all the old heritage & hard to get seeds for flowers, vegetables, trees, herbs, & of course Fruit & Nuts. ... If you get the magazine "Your Garden",their contact details etc. is in every issue. | About the Author Mildura 15th February 2012 10:12pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Rebecca says... Hi phil@tyalgum..I didn't know that BABACO are sterile..that's what I love about gardening people..always full of little bits of knowledge... I didn't think to check Tropical Fruit World..I must admit I gravitate towards Daleys from force of habit I guess..My traveling days are over I'm afraid but will give them a buzz & check their mail order. I've been horrified to find out that the postage is more often than not more expensive than the plant! NEVER MIND..I LOVE BABACO & it would be the crowning glory for my little fruit orchard. I used to go motorcycle ridung down your way & was @ Summit Organics on a bus trip several months ago with Qld Herbs..what a beatiful part of the world you live in..so jealous! Thanks Phil.. | About the Author 72 Gold Coast QLD 21st February 2012 1:31pm #UserID: 5373 Posts: 45 View All 72's Edible Fruit Trees |

epiphany says... Just popping my head in...I cut my babaco back again today. If anyone is looking for cuttings, I am aiming to cut the trunk into portions, if anyone wants one. And as others have said, no you don't need another plant for pollination. Most babaco are grown from cuttings & they take very easily. ***edited to add*** I'm in Melbourne. For some reason I think I've logged in under another profile name (sometimes I seem to be logged in as Epiphany, which has my location details & other times, I seem to log in as this epiphany, which doesn't). | About the Author epiphany3 23rd February 2012 1:02am #UserID: 6506 Posts: 18 View All epiphany3's Edible Fruit Trees |

epiphany says... Juanita: no worries. I can be contacted via http://www.caseyhomegrown.org/ (there's a contact form on that site that goes directly to me). Rob: mine has just finished fruiting & I have just pruned it back. So I assume you could put it in the ground now. It will still have a few months of growth left before it slows down over winter, so should have a little bit of time to establish itself. However, they do well in pots too, so if you're at all worried, you could always just wait until spring. I honestly don't think it will matter either way as long as it's protected from the frost if it's small. | About the Author epiphany3 23rd February 2012 11:38am #UserID: 6506 Posts: 18 View All epiphany3's Edible Fruit Trees |

Rebecca says... Hello again Phil@Tyalgum..how r things? Rebecca from SOUTHPORT Gold Coast here..Haven't we had the most wonderful weather? Getting flooded out then plants scorched from really hot hot days & high winds..can't win..lost quite a few veggies..rotted, mildewed out.. How are the Babacos coming along any side-shoots wanting their heads cut of I suppose? Are you growing any Achacha? I bought a fruit today from Coles supermarket in Southport & going to give that a go.. Look forward to hearing back.. | About the Author 72 Gold Coast QLD 8th March 2012 2:31pm #UserID: 5373 Posts: 45 View All 72's Edible Fruit Trees |
Phil@Tyalgum says... No sign of side shoots yet but might try and wound the trunk so I can get some to form.. the plant itself is loaded with semi-ripe fruit so it is getting a little top heavy. I have some nice achacha seedlings too but they took about six months to surface after I planted them, a little slower than expected! | About the Author TyalgumPhil Murwillumbah 8th March 2012 3:13pm #UserID: 960 Posts: 1377 View All TyalgumPhil's Edible Fruit Trees |
Rebecca says... Hi Phil Rebecca /Southport I've been checking out Pre-Ordering from various suppliers - Daleys they want $79 plus delivery for a bloody Babaco! Don't forget to put a pic of you eating babaco..my mouth is watering already haha.. Glad you've had a good strike with Achacha. Still keeping my eyes open for WAMPI (also @ the right price) Thanks Phil..I'll keep in touch.. | About the Author 72 Gold Coast QLD 9th March 2012 2:52am #UserID: 5373 Posts: 45 View All 72's Edible Fruit Trees |
John Mc says... Rebecca, I can take the pressure off Phil and send you a Babaco cutting if you're still looking for one? I have them falling over everywhere atm. The only thing is, they will be a fresh cutting so you will have to strike it yourself, which is easy to do as long as you keep it on the drier side. johnatcentralcoastskylightsdotcomdotau | About the Author JohnMc1 Warnervale NSW 9th March 2012 8:35am #UserID: 2743 Posts: 2043 View All JohnMc1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Rebecca says... Hi Fruit Guy..the weather's been so bad I haven't moved them out of their pots. but kept them wrapped in damp newspaper with small branches covering & leaning ova them to break the heat..today I bit the bullet & moved them into a larger pot with some compost & bulb growing potting mix..extra good drainage..I'll leave them for several months till they've re-established then bed them in permanently..I can't wait for the cooler period to come.. If you have some spare time, perhaps you can come to my place & give me some advice about how I could be getting the best results from my fruit orchard when I get around to it..
