Bare rooted apple trees

    5 responses

I have 2 bare rooted apple trees but I haven't prepared the sites yet for planting.
What is the best way of dealing with the trees while the site is prepared. It will probably be at least 2 weeks before they are ready to go in.
Should I bury them in the ground and cover loosely with soil?

Hey Richard, the process you've described is called "heeling in" and I reckon it works quite well. I'm not sure on the exact details but here's a website that describes it pretty well: http://www.arborday.org/trees/membershiptrees/heeling.cfm.
Good luck with the trees :)

Yep- just bury them in the sand and give them a watering in. As long as you move them again before the weather warms and they start to sprout leaves- you'll be fine.

Thanks. Hopefully as long as the roots don't dry out they will be ok.

Ive got an apple tree here in Melbourne. I purchased it last year and it grew quite a bit. We are already in winter and it hasn't lost its leaves. Is that right? Very few leaves turned a bit yellow. I thought that would be because I haven't fertilized it for a while.
