russ says... Howdy, The cavandish plants are 16 feet tall so I'm not sure what dwarf size is. The hands are 6kgs each and a good size bunch has between 8-12 hands. The one we are eating off atm produced $900 worth of bananas at the $14.99 price we are being charged here in the country. To be eating bananas year round you will need to have approx 20 adult plants plus suckers. Something to plan for :). BJ says... Lachie, just watch out you dont get pinged by DEEDI. You aren't allowed to grow Cavendish in or around Brisbane. You cant grow any without a permit. Even with a license you can only grow these: Blue Java, Bluggoe, Ducasse, Goldfinger (FHIA 01), Kluai Namwa Khom (Dwarf Ducasse), Lady Finger and Pisang Ceylan (Mysore type). The application is easy, but the banana plants will generally cost you $15 to start off. http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/26_16392.htm | About the Author Theposterformerlyknownas Brisbane 25th August 2011 1:43pm #UserID: 3270 Posts: 1552 View All Theposterformerlyknownas's Edible Fruit Trees |

russ says... If everyone in this country worries about a government department, nothing would ever happen. Nobody is going to go door to door taking dna samples of banana plants to see if they are cavandish or not. All I know if my plants are 12-16 feet tall and bear approx 60kgs plus of fruit per flower. I do have a smaller variety that has similar sized fruit but is a smaller herb/palm. I will be in Brisbane in approx a month so if anyone wants suckers email me at russ_drinkwater@yahoo.com.au | About the Author rustynutz eidsvold 16th September 2011 3:08pm #UserID: 845 Posts: 64 View All rustynutz's Edible Fruit Trees |

Dana says... I've sent you an email Russ so hopefully you get it. I ended up applying for the license but the plants cost $30 each, you can only purchase them from backyardbananas.com.au and they have at least a 6 week wait whilst they clear a backorder. I wonder when I drive around SE Qld how many of the people with bananas in their back and front yards actually have permits - stuff all I imagine. | About the Author Dana3 Brisbane 22nd September 2011 2:20pm #UserID: 5837 Posts: 2 View All Dana3's Edible Fruit Trees |

BJ says... I got mine last winter from them. Its fruiting now. Its a fantastic banana. I picked up the BJ and a Dwarf Ducasse. BJ is twice the size of DDU. it suckers lots as well. The Ducasse I received had already suckered when I got it, so I got two plants for the price of 1. Neither have shown much sign of fruit or suckering again yet though... | About the Author Theposterformerlyknownas Brisbane 22nd September 2011 7:51pm #UserID: 3270 Posts: 1552 View All Theposterformerlyknownas's Edible Fruit Trees |
russ says... Hi,No-one I know of with home orchards worries about such rubbish anymore. Most of it is out of date from the bejelk-peterson times. Same as having no-more than 6 laying cooks etc. Its all bullshit.Years ago when I worked in the justice dept a butcher in rockhampton was fined for selling low fat sausages! | About the Author rustynutz eidsvold 25th September 2011 7:30am #UserID: 845 Posts: 64 View All rustynutz's Edible Fruit Trees |
russ says... Hi, The one with the large fruit through winter produced 10 hands at a bit over 6kgs per hand. Frost stalls them a lot, frost free or sheltered is best. Cut your hands from the top downwards for a long supply time without a fruit glut. Ie cut off the whole bunch and no.1. it weighs up to 50kgs so is back breaking. no.2. all the fruit ripens at once. Better to just cut hands off at one hand a week or every 5 days depending on consumption. | About the Author rustynutz eidsvold 25th September 2011 8:18am #UserID: 845 Posts: 64 View All rustynutz's Edible Fruit Trees |

russ says... Hey, Lachie The one out the back of my oldies house grows about 6-7 tall and produces a banana bunch as big as cavandish and same size bananas as well. The only thing I can say is that it takes longer to develop and ripen. But the solution is to plant more clumps if you have the space.
