I was just wondering how easy or possible it is to grow Coconut palms in Perth suburbs. I live by the coast in high limestone area but have heard of some palms surviving in the region. is it worth my while trying as I have always been interested in growing some? Thanks

AUSSIE, read this from some years ago.

It's always a good idea to type the topic in the search box at top right to see if anyone has asked the same question.
Just because a plant will grow and survive doesn't mean it will actually fruit out of its normal environment.

Save your money and time on something else. We're up near your way in Mindarie and in limestone country as well. The limestone and salt laden winds are good for this plant but suffice to say that the winter weather is the problem. Its a true tropical plant just like the Lipstick palms (of which I have tried many times.... and failed). Unless you have a hot house/heating then you'll get a chance otherwise with all the care in the world planting them in the Perth elements they will struggle badly. Very nice palm tree though and the envy of palm enthusiasts thats for sure.
You could try to have one indoors, growing out from a coconut like a bonsai effect. There was a some mob in QLD awhile back that sold them like that but the cost of them and the additional quarantine costs was too much. Don't forget that they would also need to be acclimatised for an indoor/heated aspect.
But if you want the lush tropical look
in palms that grow well in Perth then you cant go wrong with the Kentias, Spindles, Bottles and the Cat Palms. All of these palms have thick leathery fronds that do well in our windy conditions. All are slow growing and dont need need as much water when mature.
Hope some of this helps you.
