cranberries in WA (forum)

Kath starts with ...
Hi there. Wondering if anyone in the Perth area has tried growing cranberries. Have been googling them but can't find any info re people growing them in Perth area. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated-ie am I wasting my time trying? Thanks

No but I would be interested in your progress. Do you go away very often? That is always my problem with plants that need lots of water such as my water chesnuts - they dry out.

We have retic so going away's not a problem. I get horse manure which has spoilt hay mixed through it & chuck a handful of composting worms in & a few months later have beautiful rich castings to grow my vegies in-they really hold water & coz it's got sand through it ,doesn't get 'wet.' I'm thinking maybe I could grow the cranberries in a bath like this but haven;t found anyone who has grown them yet for tips.

Hi Kath,

I ordered some cranberries from diggers last year... and they are still alive close to a year on... I put them in hanging baskets and have kept them damp... they have grown heaps... not sure how long til they fruit or what time of year they fruit... Can give u an update when there are changes... I think its a great idea about putting them in the bath - it will make it easy to keep damp and the worm castings will give the cranberries a rich nice soil.

Just wondering how the cranberries are going? I have read a little but would like more info on them. I think the Tasmanian climate would suite crannies. Not sure where to get plants/vines or even if the state gov regulations would allow them into the state.

I have seen cranberry plants sold in Bunnings Melbourne. You may get some over there too. DR Glowinske book has a good chapter on growing this fruit if you are interested.

Luckily I didnt need diggers, I found some cheap healthy plants at Mitre 10 when just looking around! (who wouldve thought :P) Also found a Mahonia aquifolium at bunnings which I was also going to buy from diggers- just need to find a bilberry now!
