Hi. I am doing my head in researching to find a suitable compantion to my dwarf Reed avocado tree. I bought the Reed, not knowing i might need a second tree to pollinate it. I didn't really want two trees but would like enough fruit so i am considering it. I would like to know if there is a small type B Avocado that will grow similar to my Reed. I am looking at planting them only a couple of feet apart so they grow together. I feel its such a big decision (1 or 2 plants)and I want to get it right from the start. Can you please help me??

wendie,Reed is a great A and I reckon the 3 best tasting B's are sharwil, shepard and edranol....by a mile.Shepard likes warm climates, edronol like cool climates but sharwil should be just right. Some referencs claim it is the best in the world. It has an interesting history originating in the 1950's at a place called Redland Bay.
Brendan is an avo whizz so his opinion would be helpful.

Hi wendie, I've never heard of a dwarf Reed avo, did it say that on the label?
The Reed usually grows 7 to 8 metres high. Naturally, you can keep it pruned to about 4 metres.

Don't know about being an avo whizz Mike, Jason from Portland knows much more!

Because the Reed bears late(ish) in the year wendie, take your pic from Mike's list (I'd go with Edranol!), there's also Nabal, Walden & Linda, all good type 'B' avos.

Best bet is to check with your local nursery :-)

I have seen reeds take over a yard being 12m+ so I prune mine to 3m and let it grow into a shepard. My wurtz got away and it is hard to prune it back and my hazzard was sawn through at 2.5m to control its size.I am too warm for sharwil and after consecutive failed seasons it volunteered as a dragonfruit post/stump.

Pine Island Nursery in Florida have some strange information on avocados that I wasn't aware of. For example they say that Wurtz can be either type A or type B, depending on the plant. (How does one test?)
Also they say cross pollinization gives a negligible benefit to fruit production (1%).

I am surprised more dwarf avocados are not available. Bacon supposedly grows to 15m, couldn't it be grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock?
