Causes the most prickle injuries .. and as the spines are so long lasting infection sets in fast Very well advised to remove older fronds and be extra careful when doing so . I would use a long handled lopper , and have twine laid out ready to stack fronds onto . BD says... All date palms belong to the phoenix genus. The lower leaflets on each frond ( those closest to the trunk ) are reduced to sharp spines on all phoenix palms. From the many phoenix palms that I have in my garden, I find that you need to be careful when removing old fronds but otherwise the spines arent a problem.
