Linda starts with ... Suggestions for fruit trees to grow in front yard (east facing behind colourbond fence) in Ormeau - half way between Gold Coast and Brisbane.Have small children so would prefer no thorns.Like the idea of dwarf and multi grafted trees so don't take up as much room - anyone had luck with the multi grafted "fruit salad trees" around this area?Is it too hot for cherry trees here?Would love trees that doesn't take long to fruit - what are some suggestions? | About the Author Linda4 ORMEAU 17th May 2009 3:41pm #UserID: 2334 Posts: 1 View All Linda4's Edible Fruit Trees |
Speedy says... you could plant for the kids, a 'lolly garden'. There are quite a few species of small fruited trees and shrubs that grow well in sub-tropics. Grumichama Pitanga Cedar bay cherry Ceylon hill cherry Jaboticaba Yellow jaboticaba miracle fruit Pitomba Rio grange cherry other fruits depending, on space, would be most citrus Passionfruit -like an easterly aspect (and tellis) There are heaps more species to chose from but it realy comes down to what you like to eat and how much you're prepared to do to look after them. eg. if you realy like guavas then grow guava, but then there are things you'll have to do to deal with fruit fly. | About the Author Speedy Swan Hill, Vic 18th May 2009 7:55am #UserID: 2305 Posts: 250 View All Speedy's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hi Linda, I can recommend the cedar bay cherry (beach cherry) - it's very easy going and my family likes the fruit. I'm not sure when it comes into full production - mine 2 yrs old and have yet to get a big crop. The yellow strawberry guavas are good too (can be variable but mine ex-daleys and really sweet) It's also easy to grow and bears heavily from young age. Your selections may need to take into account the shading and how much sun that part of the garden gets though. | About the Author amanda19 geraldton WA 19th May 2009 10:45am #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |
