Suggestions for fruit trees to grow in front yard (east facing behind colourbond fence) in Ormeau - half way between Gold Coast and Brisbane.Have small children so would prefer no thorns.Like the idea of dwarf and multi grafted trees so don't take up as much room - anyone had luck with the multi grafted "fruit salad trees" around this area?Is it too hot for cherry trees here?Would love trees that doesn't take long to fruit - what are some suggestions?

you could plant for the kids, a 'lolly garden'. There are quite a few species of small fruited trees and shrubs that grow well in sub-tropics.

Grumichama
Pitanga
Cedar bay cherry
Ceylon hill cherry
Jaboticaba
Yellow jaboticaba
miracle fruit
Pitomba
Rio grange cherry

other fruits depending, on space, would be most citrus
Passionfruit -like an easterly aspect (and tellis)

There are heaps more species to chose from but it realy comes down to what you like to eat and how much you're prepared to do to look after them.
eg. if you realy like guavas then grow guava, but then there are things you'll have to do to deal with fruit fly.

Hi Linda,
I can recommend the cedar bay cherry (beach cherry) - it's very easy going and my family likes the fruit. I'm not sure when it comes into full production - mine 2 yrs old and have yet to get a big crop.
The yellow strawberry guavas are good too (can be variable but mine ex-daleys and really sweet) It's also easy to grow and bears heavily from young age.
Your selections may need to take into account the shading and how much sun that part of the garden gets though.
