I came across lot of posts and rave reviews about 'Gritty Mix' on GardenWeb forum. There are lots of success stories from people using it. I could not find any post here regarding it, has anyone tried it here in Australia, whats your experience? Is it worth the effort?

Well I just started growing fruit trees in pot using potting mix so no problem at this stage. But potting mix needs to be changed after every 1-2 yrs (big task when pot is big) , I've read gritty mix lasts much longer. Also, I've read plants grow faster n healthier using that gritty mix (n that's the point of using it) as compared to premium quality potting mix, so why not? If it is easy to make n trees grows well in it, I think it can be worth investment if u can afford it. Of course there are some failure stories as well using that mix.

Hi Db, I have had good results with the mix created for cacti and succulents...which is gritty and has good drainage (can buy at nurseries)
I have young grumichama plants growing in it and they are nearly twice the size of the ones in normal potting mix, planted at the same time (from seeds) which I found interesting.
I can't remember if I used half and half (with normal potting mix) or straight cacti mix though...it was a while ago and I originally set it up for some yam tubers...

Only those Db..(and some cacti and succulents of course :) Yes you can get the mix in Bunnings (lge and small bags)
Maybe try half and half? Have a look at it and see what u think anyway...some types of plants might not want too sharp a drainage.
Coir is also more resistant to breaking down.
