Hi
Just wondering if seeds of passionfruit come true to type..I have some fruit but not sure how to process the seed to get it to germinate. Any advice would be appreciated!

I, Jantina's husband ,Geoff, have just germinated a heap of passionfruit seeds. I planted the fresh seeds straight into potting mix and they were up in a few weeks( kept warm in our solar growing room). They are just black passionfruit from a grafted Nelly Kelly rootstock. I am keen to avoid the Nelly Kelly, as it takes over after the top graft gets frosted off. I have also bought similarly grown plants from our local market which are growing extremely well but are not yet at the fruiting stage. Hope this helps.

Correction, they were seeds from another seedling grown black passionfruit. These were very fresh seed, and that I think, makes the whole process much easier.

Our neighbour has a Passionfruit Nelly Kelly and apparently the graft has died or maybe it cannot be found but it suckers and you find the suckers 100 m away from the plant.
I had a passionfruit from seed which was much better behaved, but you have to cut back each year if not it looks awful.

Hi Laisla,
I have found the best way is to let the seed dry out naturally in the fruit itself. When its all wrinkled and dry just take out the seed and plant in a good potting mix and cover finely with seed raising mix. They will take 2/3 weeks to germinate up here at this time of the year. As a matter of fact I have heaps of plants up at the moment just 20 mm high - taken from a lovely black passionfruit. I get up to Cairns each fortnight - if you would like some just let me know ............ Ken

And...u can scarify (spelling?) the seed by putting sandpaper in a jar (with a lid) rough side facing in. Put the seeds in and shake jar vigorously several times (to scratch the hard outer coating) then plant.

Passionate about Passionfruit says...
I have started a couple of Sweetheart plants from seed, only commercial growers can get access to this variety.
Will they grow true to type? If not what am I likely to get?
