The Eugenias are noted for differing in fruit quality in different locations as well as the different strains. Also one persons taste is different to another. Also
The quality may be poor for a year or two followed by good quality fruit. Same with the brasilian cherries. Some say the black are best and some prefer the red ones. The quality can differ even between seedlings from a same tree. It becomes easier by learning not to be fussy and also planting out several trees.

The dark types tend to have smaller fruit than the yellow/orange ones and the flavour is different as well. The yellow form has thicker sweeter flesh and a tang missing in the darks. There is some variation due to environmental conditions. My dark grumi volunteered for mulch patrol as it fruited at the same time as my yellow and comparatively 'disgraced itself'.
Fruit do vary from year to year and in terms of brix.

Taste of the black is still quite good. They vary on the same plant and quite dramatically so depending on their ripeness, which can be hard to pick. open a few and you'll find a whiteish flesh and a purpleish flesh. Fruit tastes better like a plum in the darker ones, the lighter ones are more bland but with a good tang. I had my first real crop of the season yesterday - around 15 fruit after a few weeks of taking individuals every now and then. the second crop is looking more like 100-300 fruit, as the recent bit of rain is helping to swell the numbers.
My yellow is yet to bear, but from the ones I have tasted they do taste a bit better than the blacks but can be a bit shy bearing.

Also, the ones you leave a long time can get stung - i found tiny maggoits inside one very dark fruit I opened. I will not open the fruit again.
