Just wondering if anyone has any experience with growing hazelnuts in south east Queensland. What conditions are needed?

Let me know if you succeed as my group of 5 in a sq meter area have only given me 8 nuts in 4 or 5 years - doesnt get cold enough here i guess thats why im having more success with Avos and Mangoes - grow Macadamias instead or Pecans if you have the room :)

Will be growing macadamia and pecans but I do like hazelnuts so am hoping to give them a try as well. How much cold do they really need?

Different internet sources vary between 500 to 1500 hours chill. The suggestion is they like a mild medderteranian climate, rather than a cold climate.
I know there are commercial apple farms in sw queesland (inland a little, of course) so maybe it's worth a try, depending on where you are.
There is also a difference between commercial and home production, so if you are prepared for lower crops and complete failure some years, why not try?
I suspect a low chill variety could be selected, given the progress with other fruits. Plant from seed and be the first :)
Malkmelb, I have a 5 year old hedgerow with a dozen varieties, in an area with commercial farms and I've only ever got 1 nut. This year for sure...

Hi BenW -
My nuts last year were nice if i ate them early but if i left a few another couple weeks they dried and shriveled inside their not extremely thick shell - this year only 2 bunches of catkins - one has finished and no feathers on the other - the truffle hazle has one bunch that hasnt dropped and receptive feathers on Lambert are ready - so the timing is all wrong this year so maybe no nuts for me - LOL :)

It sounds like you need a couple more varieties for consistent pollination Mark :D
Not that that has helped me any lol
I have a few catkins out there this year so fingers crossed :)

Hello, any updates a decade later. I planted 14 hazelnut trees in Applethorpe in September 2024 and am hoping for a 'nutful' outcome. Found great information online
NSW Hazelnut Growers Handbook at https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/horticulture/nuts/growing-guides/hazelnut-growers-handbook
And, Hazelnut variety assessment for SE Australia: https://www.tafco.com.au/wp-content/uploads/RIRDCHazelnuts2010.pdf
both of these resources are full of deep information about chilling requirements and pollination needs.
