I don't know but mine looks the same. I live in Sydney and I don't think it has suffered from frost as it has been sheltered by another tree.

My Panama Berry suffered a bit through the winter and the leaves turned similar to yours. However now that it is warming up in Brisbane the leaves are getting greener. I notice I am getting about 2 or 3 flowers starting to form on each branch.
It looks like I am growing mine in the same bonsai bag as you.
I love the smell of the panama berries leaves. I can't wait to taste the actual berry.

When we had a freak frost 5 weeks ago it was immediately evident that a lot of plants were damaged. But others took weeks to show signs of damage. I did some pruning a couple of weeks after it happened (hopeful there wasn't going to be another frost). I pruned off much brown stuff right back to where the damage appeared to stop. After a few more weeks some plants died back a bit more. Once again the extent of the frost damage wasn't evident until several weeks after the frost.
In my opinion Panama Berries are a great tasting berry. I am surprised they aren't more popular (especially for kids). I have seen a couple of large healthy trees loaded with berries here on the Gold Coast. Neither was looked after. One was in poor clay soil on a hillside. Both trees looked very happy.
BTW. I used to like Panama Berries but I may have OD'ed on them because the second time I ate them I became nauseous. My brother ate them with me and had no ill effects. Unfortunately the taste now turns my stomach.

Del I think your tree looks as though it will be fine. It sounds like it has suffered from the frost but it is still alive and green and with some warm weather it should push away nicely. The Panama berry is one of my favourites, it is a great browsing tree and is very tough once it is established. Mine has never had any additional water other than what falls from the sky and every few months I need to cut a meter or so from the top so I can reach the berries. I think they taste like vanilla ice cream.

I think the Panama Berry dies back a little before summer. I've had mine for about a year in a pot and noticed the same thing last year. It looked dead at one point, then came to life in summer and was tough as nails through all the dry weather - it now stands at about 2m! It even fruited a little during winter, but it's now hibernating.

It sounds as though they suffer from the cooler winters in your southern climate.

I just ate my first panama berry and it was delicious. I have had the tree in a pot for about a year.
Very sweet with a rich flavour almost like a sweet fig. I can't wait to get more.

Its also worth mentioning that Panama berries would have to be one of the quickest growing fruit trees in the world.
