I've got this beautiful tree which grows on an east facing wall and each winter it has the nicest smelling flowers ever (bees like them too). I accidentally found out it is luculia gratissima (the same family as coffee- rubiaceae), does anyone know if its rare?

It's relatively rare, in that there are thousands of ppl who wouldn't have heard of it who would know say, a lilly pilly from a Photinia.

Beautiful is how I'd describe it too.
best on moist, very well drained, low pH soils, montane, frost free climate are best for it I believe.
I've seen a few specimens around, from Sthn Vic. to Nthn. NSW.

I remember Peter Valder did a feature on Liculia on Burke's Backyard years ago.
It was one he'd stumble upon that was hanging over the front fence of a suburban garden (Sydney I guess).

He was surprised at how well it was doing in that situation/climate as they have a rep for being quite fickle and die despite some gardeners best efforts to satisfy them.

I think he went on to made the point that gardeners should always have a go at trying to grow one or two things that others will say 'wont grow there'.

As seasoned gardener, even he was surprised (and excited in a Peter Valder sort of way) at that one.

Nice plant, hope it does well for you.
