nappies/water crystals (forum)

Grant starts with ...
G'day all.
Has anyone heard about using disposable nappies as a means of holding moisture around freshly planted trees,like water crystals.Are they as biodegradable as claimed.
I am all for recycling,as long as it is not environmentally harmfull.I believe the nappies are made from a non toxic polymer substance the same as water crystals?How ever I am unsure of the plastic it is house in???

The Crystals in nappies aren't the same as the ones in water crystals for the garden. I don't know the exact difference but the garden ones are specifically made not to effect the soil and the plants but the nappies are just made to absorb regardless of the effect of the surrounding components. Nappies also aren't made to release the water like water crystals. Nappies also have plastic type material on the outside so as not to leek - I gather you are talking about new nappies and not used - in which case you may as well buy water crystals

Trialing the polymer at the moment.The water holding capacity of it is amazing.Dry it resembles cotton wool.Add water and it resembles horticultural water crystals.Off course I seperate the plastic and discard that.And I am recycling used nappies.Bit of nitrogen should not be harmfull.
If it keeps young trees alive during the dry season,and is cost free then I think it is worth a try.

A learning gardener says...
I've been using used (wet only) nappy innards for a few months, both under fruit trees, herbs and for flowers in our garden. The herbs, flowers and trees have never looked back. I also line hanging baskets with new nappies duct taped together. If this will poison me and my family I'm keen to know.

I had a small bag of those crystalls who were wet allready but it became a soup after a while.

Now i use fibretowell strips in my pots and let a piece of it hang out through the holes.

This should drain the pots and also suck up water if the pot is really dry and rainwater is flowing under the pot.

This stuff really sucks up water very well.
