MoreBikesPlease starts with ... Hi! Planted a baby fig tree in winter, here in Melbourne. It's now Sept 27, but no shoots or leaves yet! Mature fig trees in nearby streets have heaps of leaves and even fruit. My new apricot tree has lots of leaves. Do I have a dud fig, or I just have to be patient? PS the tree gets enough sunlight. Good soil, water, Seasol. I pruned 2 inches off the top. The garden centre says it's OK, their other baby figs haven't woken up yet either. Edit: it's a White Adriatic variety. | About the Author MoreBikesPlease Melbourne 27th September 2011 12:23pm #UserID: 5888 Posts: 3 View All MoreBikesPlease's Edible Fruit Trees |

au0rey says... Dont throw it out yet! I bought a Flemings' Brown Turkey and it looked dead for a long while. I asked the same question and pulled up the tree to bin it but regretted and planted it back. Read the story here : http://organic-is-better.blogspot.com/2009/12/fig-brown-turkey.html It was only in mid-December when mine became alive. It has since fruited and I had yummy fruits!!! | About the Author Melbourne 28th September 2011 11:49am #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

coastie says... Hi, fit4fun4life, I live on the coast too and was wondering if you could give me some pointers, it sounds like you have fruited fig trees up here. Do you do anything about fruit fly? Do we need the bees to pollinate the fruit, how soon would I be able to bag the fruit for protection? I have just put one in a large pot and it already has lovely leaves and small fruit. | About the Author coastie 31st October 2011 8:12am #UserID: 6800 Posts: 59 View All coastie's Edible Fruit Trees |
fit4fun4life says... Hi Coastie, Up until this seaason my fig has done really well...no fruit fly just cheeky magpies who don't mind green fruit but we usually share and they are delicious. My father in law in currumbin also grows them easily. This year some rotten bug has got to mine. Main thing is to feed the soil so the soil has everything the tree needs to be its best...like us really! So that includes being able to repell bugs.I'd got slack with mine because my chooks hang out in this garden and scratch everything from underneath so I'd say thats what my problem is. Good luck.
