amanda says... Hi Charles C.S. I have been to Julie Firths nursery - it's a great set-up and she is a guru in semi arid permaculture. I don't go there as often as I might like and haven't really explored the place in detail...it's also her home.. She has a great selection of unusual veggie seeds too. She should have her catalogue out for this year. I think she is planning on expanding into liquid fertilisers/teas - but not the usual kind. The only word I can think of is microbially dynamic teas!?? | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. WA 1st June 2010 3:46pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hi Richard...Ah that's better...Part 1 is sooo big my connection almost timed out! Anyway - yes your vine very sad looking. It looks like the rootstock is taking over? Need to follow that 5 pointed leaf back to the trunk and chop them off. Have you ever pruned the vine? If not - I would hack it right back two a few main branches a few meters long and start again. It's very congested looking. Passionfruit fruits on new growth - you need to encourage it to put out alot more - wait until early spring when it will take off again. It also looks very hungry. There is a lot competetition around it there. It needs a good feed. That's about all I can think of? Unless it has a virus - is the rind of the fruit a normal thickness? Good luck - I hope this helps... | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. WA 3rd June 2010 7:10pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Richard says... Hi Amanada, Any thanks for starting PART 2 so I can get your feedback! Those five pointed rootstock things come up out of the ground. I'm forever pulling them out. They will spring up anywhere up to 10-12 feet away from the trunk. Looks like I missed that one! Competition is definitely fierce, I'll feed it up a bit. I usually give them a couple of handfuls of Banana Special couple of times a year. The rind is fine, and the fruit I've been eating have been delicious! I'll give it a prune back late Winter and see how it goes next year. Thanks again for all your feedback! amanda says... Hi Rhys - i have 4 grafted vines in a row - but only one sends rootstock up (from under the ground) - I wonder why some are ok and not others... Unless I had a disease problem in the soil I probably wouldn't bother with grafteds again. Are your fruits still ripening? I am still having trouble with my panama red dropping young fruit. I have cleared out some of the foliage and some are actually ripening now. | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. Rhys says... Yes...slowly but surely! They've done much better than i thought they would, but this is the first time i've had passionfruit so not really much to compare them to. The recent very cold days (by newcastle standards), hasn't seemed to have affected them too much, with a few looking as though they'll be ready to drop in the next couple of days. I've now had 20 ripen, for a yield of over 1.5 kg. Here's a link to my plant on Folia in case you're interested: http://myfolia.com/plantings/145021-black-passionfruit-passiflora-edulis | About the Author Getafix Newcastle 4th July 2010 8:34pm #UserID: 3112 Posts: 86 View All Getafix's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hey Rhys (and anyone who can help?) these are some of todays P'fruit - the big yellow one is a panama gold, the purple is a Sunshine special and the 2 wrinkly ones are the Panama Reds.... I don't know why the Pan red is doing this..the Pan golds are dropping a few like this (but not as many) and the Sunshine special none at all (and it's the most neglected vine also..) The only thing I can think of is that the purple types are more cold tolerant - so the Sunshine special not bothered... Anyway - flash site Rhys! Your fruit look look lovely. No problems there - well done :-)

amanda says... Hello peter - long time!? Yes I can send you seed - but this is the vine with that low grade woodiness virus..? It will transmit I think. I am told it's the main commercial variety over here. I really like the fruit - it's like a cross between purples and Panamas? Anyway - if you want to have a go - my email is sunley at wn dot com dot au. Send me your mailing address - no swap needed (maybe another day - we will be moving in near future) | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. Rhys says... I've been playing around with the Folia site for a little while now Amanda and it's pretty good...and it keeps getting better as they are always adding new features...i can even update my plantings and milestones from my phone now which is pretty cool! How old is the panama red...could it just be old age? What are the insides of the fruit like? Could it be under pollination? As i said, i don't have much experience so won't be a great help sorry :( Moving?! After all the fruit trees you've set up? Are you going to try and take any with you? | About the Author Getafix Newcastle 4th July 2010 11:21pm #UserID: 3112 Posts: 86 View All Getafix's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hi BJ/Rhys - what's a panama perfection? sounds new..is it more tropical? I have 20 x35L tree bags on the way from Daley's as I type Rhys! I hope I can get some out... The pan red is 2yrs old. Some are still ripening and they are fine. Those wrinkly ones have normal pulp development but it's white still. I have just given the vine a big feed of blood n bone and as there is no rain :( I have upped the water. I will post feedback if it works. | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. BJ says... I found an article in the weekend paper that panama perfection could be launched at the QLD Garden Expo on the weekend. It is supposed to be a superior type of the panama red - I cant remember all of its attributes, but I seem to recall that it was more long lived, more prolific, more disease resistant and perhaps more cold tolerant than the normal one. Plus it is supposed to taste better. I think it was found at Birdwood. | About the Author Theposterformerlyknownas Brisbane 5th July 2010 12:54pm #UserID: 3270 Posts: 1552 View All Theposterformerlyknownas's Edible Fruit Trees |

Linda says... Hi Amanda, Found an old forum of last year the other day as I was looking for Cape Gooseberries and stumbled across yours. I sent a message however, no response so I am guessing it is because it is old. Found this one so I will try from here :-) Here is what I wrote: Hi Amanda, Just found this forum on the Cape Gooseberry. I had a plant that I carried around from house to house and it survived all moves bar the last one. The original came from seeds from my Mum years ago, sadly she is no longer with us and so no way to get any more seeds. I was wondering if you have any from your friends 'heirloom' plant that you might be able to post to me? Would really appreciate it if you are able to. Thanks, Linda......... Hope you might be able to assist. | About the Author Linda Brisbane QLD 19th July 2010 9:11pm #UserID: 3940 Posts: 6 View All Linda's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hi Linda - yes did reply in C.G topic - (I lose track of my 'threads' a lot!) No seed at present (plants only small) - but try Diggers if u are really keen in the meantime? Otherwise send your email to sunley(at)wn(dot)com(dot)au and I can send when they fruit - but looking at a few months yet. | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. amanda says... Hi Rhys..u can never have too much of a good thing...!? I removed quite a bit of the foliage around those pan reds and they have started ripening better now. A lot won't make it now tho' - but I will be icy-poled out soon.. The extra food n water didn't seem to make any difference (just that feedback I mentioned above)

amanda says... Very much so Rhys! I think I am leaning to Panama Gold over Red these days. To me it's slightly more complex in flavour and sweeter. It also seems to ripen with less hassle - the fruit can drop earlier and it's still sweet... I am very partial to the purples tho'...they are so much more intense. You are doing great with purples and 3kg mate! Lucky u. They tend to be more tart but nothing a little low GI sugar can't fix if needed? (or ice cream, pav etc..mmm) A panama vs a purple is like a rose sav versus a cab sav to my taste buds..! If u like P'fruit - keep your eye out for some purple hybrids like sunshine special (I have this and it's lovely) | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. Brad says... yay, I can play in this thread. This beast of a vine seems to have finished producing for now. Would you recommend pruning part of it now to try produce 2 crops a year? I should also grab an updated photo of the Nellie Kelly left in Como. those that like I spy photo games: 1) spot the loquat tree posted in another thread in this shot 2) windmill 3) native frangipani 4) jacaranda

amanda says... He he - looks like a great spot there Brad! Congrat's on the move :) 2 crops a year? You are keen! Is it a NK black/purple? Not sure there tho' - my NK black has already flowered, set fruit and finished flowering at this stage? Maybe u could try tip pruning only - plus a big yummy manure feed, potash and a whole heap of water to kick start it? If you prune it right back it may take longer to "catch up"? I am about one month short of having passionfruit all year round, this year! I think i have died and gone to heaven :) | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton Mid West WA 19th October 2010 7:29pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... The leaves on the vertical, near the top, look a bit suspicious don't they Brad? The Pest and Disease info guy estimates that most passionfruit are virus infected to mild degree..?! They seem to overcome them with vigorous growth. Just think of how much more room your vines will have now tho' - that vine would have swamped that shed in no time (and murphy would make sure all the fruit were on the neighbours side!?) ;-) | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton Mid West WA 26th October 2010 8:48pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |
